[It's late, late evening on the deck, edging towards proper nighttime, and by all appearances, Jesse has the place entirely to herself. It's the Barge, so there's probably noise coming from behind a closed door somewhere, and there's people visible through the glass walls of the greenhouse - but right now, the open deck itself is an oasis of calm.
For about thirty seconds, anyway. Then there's the sound of springing rope, and a pair of hands shoot up out of nowhere and grab onto the lowest rung of the deck railing, pulling Shaw up onto view. And Shaw, woman of few words though she may be, is never good for calm.]
[Jesse likes the night. She took night shifts for a reason, after all - always easier to do some hard labour at night rather than lie awake worrying about her thoughts doing a swan dive into the fucking toilet.
So yeah, she usually goes for a wander at night, because all the janitorial positions are already filled and she hasn't got anything else to do.
Which is why it's a wild surprise to hear the weird trampoline sound and see someone clamber their way back over the railing.]
Holy shit--! [She runs over immediately, leaning over the rail to offer a hand to Shaw.] Are you alright?
I'm his warden. If he's not working his shifts, I'm available to fill in. I have a kitchen key and I'm used to the inventory system, I work swing shift.
Hey, uh. Yeah, I feel like I already kind of fucked it with him?
[She sounds immediately self-admonishing.]
I asked him if he was okay since I hadn't seen him, and I think he thought that meant he was in trouble for slacking off? I-I really just meant I hadn't seen him, so if he was sore or tired from all the bullshit that he should take it easy and I can cover him, I just... like, I'm technically his boss? Even though I gave him the key because he obviously knows more about the job than I do, he's been great about teaching me, but I think he thinks he's in trouble and that's- no, that wasn't what I meant at all.
With Red down, reiterating the request to me know if you need help on inventory. I can take shifts.
This is also most likely a port month, per our usual patterns. He usually spends a lot of time on inventory restocks when we stop, so I volunteer in advance for that. Whether he's available to help or not.
So despite everything that's gone on in your life, did you manage to make any holiday traditions for yourself? Like, go see a movie then order too much Chinese food? Volunteer to help orphans? Dress up as an elf so kids can take photos with Santa?
[ A small box left outside of her room door shortly after this discussion will contain a bracelet with a carved image of a fox on it, as well as detailed instructions for use.

Thank you for crossing swords with him. Your efforts are appreciated. -FL ]

[ Her voice is warm and pleased. ]
How do you feel about going out for a night with me and a friend next port, as long as nothing's on fire?
We've got some things to celebrate.

It's terrifying, honestly? Like. This is someone's whole life in my hands.

Re: after perma-pairing
...question. Is it... also terrifying to get permanently paired as an inmate?

On the back of the clearly hand-drawn card, he has printed the date (Dec 28) and time, as well as the location - the Enclosure.

Oh my god, Malcolm. [She sounds delighted.] Malcolm. Did whoever write your invite never see your name in writing?
